Riddick (2013) Movie Review:
First, there was 'Pitch Black (2000)'and then 'The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)' and it was time for 'Riddick (2013)' as writer as well as director, David Twohy, continues with the adventures of his anti-hero, Riddick, again enacted by Vin Diesel. In spite of being the third in a series, the movie does not depend upon the audience being familiar with the hero or the environment, and can be enjoyed by the first timer while those familiar would get more out of the movie. The computer graphics is superb as the alien landscape is rendered with excellent detail is coupled with trendy gadgets and even the "ghosting" or killing of the villains is riveting.
The movie seems to happen in three parts with the beginning finding our hero stranded on a merciless planet wounded and weak. The camera work captures the bleak and alien landscape with a haunting beauty. This segment focuses entirely on Vin Diesel as he survives against the voracious animals and surroundings. The next segment finds our hero absent and focuses almost entirely on two groups of bounty hunters arriving to capture our hero dead or alive. The mean Santana (Jordi Malla) and the tough Johns are the leaders of each group. The female interest portrayed by Katee Sackoff, as Dahl, does have a meaty role, while the rest of group are fodder for the violence that is unleashed. The final segment finds the survivors having to join together against a common alien enemy.
Riddick seems stupid and full of violence but it still engages the viewer and keeps his interest with a fast moving story. Vin Diesel seems to specialise in the same type of role as in 'Fast and Furious' as well as the 'Riddick' series. Nevertheless, while he seems capable of taking his foes apart rather easily, chooses to do so with a series of intricate moves that holds the viewer.
The movie has secured a 60% overall critic score at Rotten Tomatoes and 62% audience likeability rating. The top critic review goes, "It may not win the franchise many new converts, but this back-to-basics outing brings Riddick fans more of the brooding sci-fi action they've come to expect."
With a modest budget, 'Riddick' will easily ensure the box office returns will set the stage for more sequels in the future. It carries the usual 'R' rating for its violence, brief nudity and language.
